Governor's Update

Thank you for observing International Literacy Day (officially Saturday, September 8) at your Rotary Club meetings in the first two weeks of this month.  It's one of the many ways that you can raise awareness of this vital subject.  Check out the "Literacy Now!" article to learn what the Denham Springs Rotary Club is doing for literacy!

September is also New Generations Month, a time when Rotary clubs are encouraged to support Earlyact, Youthact, Interact, Rotaract, RYLA and Youth Exchange. What better way to cultivate new Rotarians than to "grow" them?   Follow the example highlighted in "District Currents" of the Rotarians in Thibodaux, who have started an Earlyact Club, a Youthact Club (our first!) and are restarting an Interact Club.

Our recent District Membership Seminar conducted by Chairman Joe Hidalgo was an outstanding success.  Ron Brooks of the Houma-Terrebonne Rotary Club shared his proven strategies on recruiting and PDG Pete Snider added many great pointers. Learn some of their tips in the "Membership Matters" article included below.

Read also about the magic of Matching Grants, how to join the Paul Harris Society, creating a new club training position, a stained-glass window in Jennings, Family of Rotary activities in Morgan City and Patterson and important upcoming dates.  This issue is full of helpful information.

You'll notice a new and improved style of writing as you read through this issue thanks to the skill of  Rotarian Julie Baxter, who has become our  District Newsletter Editor. She is a lawyer, experienced journalist and former TV news reporter and weekend anchor.  Julie cares deeply about social issues and is making a positive difference for others in our world.  Please send her information, articles and pictures about your club's activities at jbaxter@mwtlaw.net to include in future issues.

There's much to learn in this month's District Newsletter.  Read on!

Yours in Rotary,

Charles L. Spencer
District Governor, 2007-2008

Why Rotary means you can double your money and help someone halfway around the world at the same time
How can a Rotary Club in Lake Charles clean up the unsanitary sewage problem in India?  Or how do two Rotary Clubs in Lafayette help provide clean water, and other Rotarians deliver hearty maize meal, to children in Zimbabwe?  They, and many clubs in our District and elsewhere, do it -- and much more -- with Matching Grants,  happening through....

So why is this letter just one note of thanks from voices all around the world who are saying "thank you" to Rotarians?

Membership Matters

Knowledge is Power
Could you make 200 new friends in the next year and a half?  That's the goal for District 6200's current membership drive:  200 new members for this Rotary year of 2007-2008.  Read More about how you can make it happen......

When's the last time you read a book?

Do you know that 780 million adults around the world can't do that? 780 million adults cannot read or write, and, according to Rotary International, between 94 and 115 million children have no access to education.

Rotary is working hard to change those facts, and now a big part of that effort is coming from the Denham Springs Rotary Club. Club President Jim Brown says one of the most important parts of winning Louisiana's battle with literacy is simply getting out there and interacting with young students--modelling how important to success reading is.
