Governor's Update The Rotary year is certainly in full swing. It’s already October -- Vocational Service Month, suggesting many activities. Ask a member to give a short talk on his or her vocation at each club meeting. Discuss applying the 4-Way Test at work. Present a vocational award to a citizen who exemplifies outstanding professional achievement while maintaining high ethical standards. Undertake community projects to focus on developing character, providing career information to youth or mentoring small businesses. These activities can last all year! Efforts to improve literacy in communities within our District, and beyond our country, are also in full swing. In this issue you can learn how to participate with the Rotary Club of Opelousas and others in the Read Across America Program and how the Baker Rotary Club is promoting Prime Time Family Reading Time to FEMA trailer residents. The Morgan City Rotary Club invites your club to join the District 6200 Consortium to help with literacy in China. Thinking of starting an Earlyact Club? Read of such efforts by our Rotary Clubs in Welsh and Sulphur. Perhaps a building project is more of what you have in mind, such as the one by the Baton Rouge Capital City Club described here. Learn from the Zachary Rotary Club the secret of including family members in Rotary. Find our how to train young leaders through International RYLA and to answer someone who asks, “What is Rotary?” These activities all involve Rotarians. Rotary – and our District -- have many unsung heroes. One is Larry Agee, a financial planner and the immediate past president of the Sulphur Sunrise Rotary Club. Larry recently returned from providing humanitarian relief as a member of a ShelterBox Emergency Response Team to victims of a disaster in Swaziland, Africa. His story will make you proud of him and that he’s a Rotarian. Some of our clubs sponsor a ShelterBox, which are individually numbered and can thus be tracked to their final destinations on the ShelterBox website. Please use the time between now and the November 17th District Foundation Seminar to consider doing a matching grant project. Any special interest that your club may have needs to be addressed some where in the world. A few of the international requests we have received are listed in The Rotary Foundation section for you to consider. Make plans now to attend the Seminar to get fully informed and involved. This month's District Newsletter has a lot to offer. Read on! Yours in Rotary,
Charles L. Spencer
District Governor, 2007-2008
