More than 350 Rotarians, guests and participants met in Baton Rouge earlier this month to celebrate Rotary. They came from Canada, Finland, Turkey, North Carolina, California, Louisiana and elsewhere. The great programs, delicious food and warm fellowship of our District Conference were magnetic. Hundreds more from nearby also attended the Welcome Luncheon of the Conference. Even my high expectations for the event were exceeded. This remarkable success resulted from the superb work of Co-Chairs Glenda Chambers and Clayton Lester and their dedicated Conference Committee. A glimpse of all the fun is revealed in this May Newsletter. Congratulations go to Clarence Prudhomme, our 2010-11 District Governor elected at the Business Meeting on the first day of the Conference. Others elected then are PDG Frank Bradshaw as our delegate to the 2010 Council on Legislation and PDG Don Chauvin to represent us on the Zone Selection Committee for our next R.I. Director. More kudos are in order for Lafayette Rotarian Don Mizelle for receiving The Rotary Foundation’s Service Above Self Award of only 150 given annually worldwide; PDG Richard Dunn for receiving the Governor’s Cup Award for exceptional service and leadership; Club President Beau Olinde of Baton Rouge for sponsoring the most new members this year (6); and the Houma-Terrebonne Rotary Club for recruiting the most new members (26) and having the greatest growth (46%). A record 141 new Rotarians this year attests to the great job done by Chair Joe Hidalgo and his vital District Membership Committee. Important opportunities still await us before June 30th. A District Assembly on May 31 in Lafayette will aid in-coming club officers and committee chairs. Camp RYLA on June 26-29 will engage many impressionable youth sponsored by you from your communities. For each club to meet or exceed its Foundation giving goal now will significantly increase our ability to help others in the future.
The 2008 District Conference was definitely a “Capital Experience”, packing in everything from the election of a District Governor for 2010-2011... to an exotic dance by the Turkish GSE Team and stunning songs from cast members of the musical Hair ... to a first-hand report from the front lines on the awesome work being done by the emergency response teams of ShelterBox.
