 Governor Pam Daniels’ Message

Dear Fellow Rotarians:

Rotary International President Glenn Estess has selected “Celebrate Rotary”as his theme for our 100thyear of Rotary’s existence.

It is indeed an honor and privilege to serve as Governor of District 6200 as we celebrate the centennial year of Rotary. Being the first woman governor at such an important time is humbling, but also fills me with pride, as my tenure is a tribute to the contributions that women have made to Rotary.

This year will be a significant milestone for Rotary International as we complete our campaign to eradicate Polio worldwide. It will also mark the beginning efforts of our graduates in peace and conflict resolution to promote a more peaceful world. Rotary’s efforts toward increasing literacy, promoting water managementand world health will have a significant impact and be more reason to “Celebrate Rotary”.

In this 100thyear we are Celebrating Rotary’s beginnings by giving emphasis and recognition to the Family ofRotary as well as adding emphasis and importance to the use of vocations in Rotary. Family has always been an important part of our Rotary experience and vocations were used in the founding of the first club. We are now bringing them to the fore to “Celebrate Rotary”.

I assume that you all have noted the name of the District Newsletter for the next year. Our Rotary Wheel, like any other wheel, gets noticed when it squeaks and at times needsgrease. It is my sincere wish that the “Squeaking Wheel”gets noticed every month and rarely needs grease.

As my Rotarian Pal, Walt and I visit your clubs this year we will extend to you an invitation to celebrate the Past, Present and the Future of Rotary at the Centennial District Conference in Morgan City April 7-9, 2005.

              President Glenn’s Message

On the first day of the 2004 International Assembly, RI President Glenn E. Estess, Sr. introduced the RI theme, Celebrate Rotary, in tribute to Rotary’s centennial year. “There are few organizations that last 100 years,”he said. “The fact that Rotary has reached this important milestone is a sign that there is tremendous need for Rotary service. As we look forward, it is appropriate to reflect upon our achievements –but not to simply congratulate ourselves for a job well done. Instead, we must draw inspiration from past success to help us face the challenges of a second century of service.”

President Estess announced three goals for the coming year: supporting Rotary’s polio eradication efforts as the organization’s highest priority, increasing membership to 1.5 million by the end of 2004-05, and asking every Rotarian to contribute $100 or more every year to the Annual Programs Fund of The Rotary Foundation of RI.

Estess encouraged the incoming governors to focus on three areasof emphasis: health concerns, water management, and literacy. He also stressed the importance of the family of Rotary and the need to include family members in social events and service projects, and urged clubs to commemorate the centennial by supporting the TwinClub Program and Centennial Community Projects.

The centennial offers us a special opportunity to promote Rotaryand try something new.

TECHNOLOGY SUMMIT by Don Chauvin, DGE

The Rotary year 2004-2005 marks the first 100 year celebration of Rotary. What will the next 100 years look like? I suspect that within the next 20 years we are going to experience a remarkable explosion of technology implementation at all points between the individual Rotary club members, the clubs, and Rotary International. This has only just begun.

District 6200 began the process when we offered Rotarians the information services of our District’s website. Rotarians Richard Churchman and Chad Moreno are to be commended for having the vision and know-how to provide this valuable service to all the members of our district. What an outstanding job they are doing!

I am trying to put together a group of “Computer Techies” who would like to sit and discuss the future of technology and District 6200. If you know of a Rotarian, or if you have expertise in the area of computer technology and/or the internet and would like to sit in on a round-table discussion group we sure would welcome your input!

I would like to convene what I am calling a “Technology Summit” in August. Our purpose is to meet with Rotarians Richard and Chad to discuss what the future of this district will look like in 5 years, 10 years and even 20 years from now and the role that technology should play in that future. If you feel you could contribute to these discussions, please call me at 337-893-6798 (o) or 337-893-2027 (h), or email me at don@Facts-5.com .  Once we have a group of volunteers, we will set a meeting date.  I am hoping to use the new District Office in Lafayette as the meeting venue.

“Working together, there is no limit to what the helping hands ofRotary can accomplish”

RYLA held June 17-20, 2004

By Governor Pam Daniels

District Governor Lance was on his Friendship Exchange to England during this years RYLA Camp at Lake Fausse Point State Park. Since RYLA is very dear to my heart, I want to thank him for being unable to attend. I was given the opportunity to “Lend A Hand”by attending the opening and closing of the 7thAnnual RYLA Camp in our district.

It was an extremely successful RYLA Camp, being attended by 56 Rylarians representing 27 clubs. My sincere appreciation goes to Patricia Philmon, RYLA Chairman; for all her hard work before and during the camp. Patricia along with PDG Joe Hill, helped me in beginning RYLA in District 6200 in 1998, we were under the leadership of PDG Billy Foster, and believe me, she is still great! Richard Louviere and Leslie Harless have also been with RYLA since the first camp. They served as ably assisting co-chairs. Patricia’s wonderful Rotarian Pal, husband, Jake was the camp “Gofer”.

The veteran counselors were Mimi Brooks, Morgan City Club & Garren Saxby of Sulphur were excellent. Newcomers this year Bubba & Rose Watkins with the Houma Club as well as Mike & Natalie Hayes from Westlake, Junior Counselors this year were Rylarians Whitney Bellow and Wendy Statum of Sulphur, _, Katlyn Duplantis & Tyler Hernandez from Berwick, all felt particularly rewarded by their great work.

Evening meals and noon luncheon on the last day were provided bymembers of the Rotary Clubs of Welsh, Crowley, Jennings, Patterson, Morgan City, Franklin, Abbeville, and Sulphur. These Rotarians took the time to prepare the food, transport it to the camp and then serve the campers, truly a “Service Above Self”task. Their meals described by the campers as “awesome”were one of the high points of each day. In fact, campers commented that they wanted to stay at camp because the food was much better than at home. My personal thanks are extended to these cubs in making RYLA successful.

RYLA (Continued)

Fun was had by all! The schedule was packed from beginning to end with speakers about Rotary on subjects like Interact, Rotaract, the Foundation and Ambassadorial Scholar Program. The campers learned just how much Rotary has to give the youth of our District. This year we had the campers take time and interview the Rotarians that came to take part in RYLA and this gave them a better understanding on who we are.The campers found this very interesting and helpful.

Overall the campers had a great time and even the ones who really did not want to be there in the beginning, hated to leave their new friends when it was all over!!! In other words, RYLA was GREAT!

Our Rotary Foundation’s Grant Program

Another Way For Clubs To Help Others

by PDG Frank Bradshaw

The mission of Our Rotary Foundation is to support the efforts of Rotary International in the fulfillment of the Object of Rotary, Rotary’s mission, and the achievement of world understanding and peace through local, national and international humanitarian, educational, and cultural programs.

Last year, in an effort to make both the application and the implementation processes more “user-friendly”, the Trustees of Our Foundation decided to implement a new grant structure for our Humanitarian programs that went into effect on July 1, 2003. This new structure was designed to allow new grant programs to be phased in as the older grant programs were gradually phased out. This new grant structure eliminated the twelve old grant categories and developed three easier programs to work with. The three new, user-friendly, grant programs developed were: (1) Matching Grants, (2) Individual Grants, and (3) District Simplified Grants.

Match Grantssupports our Rotary clubs and the District as we address humanitarian conditions that benefit communities in need. The Matching Grant Program will continue in a manner that is consistent and compatible with the new grant structure.

Individual Grantssupports the travel of individual Rotarians planning or implementing service projects. Individuals Grants took the place of Discovery Grants and Grantsfor Rotary Volunteers that were both phased out.

District Simplified Grantssupports the service activities or humanitarian endeavors in which clubs in the District undertake. District Simplified Grants incorporated thesame concepts as previously addressed by the Foundation’s Helping Grants, Humanitarian Transportation Grants, Community Assistance Programs Awards, and New Opportunity Grants; all of which were passed out.

Grants (Continued)

In Rotary Year 2003-04, the first year for District Simplified Grant Program, many felt that the new program was very successful as ten Clubs in the District were able to reinvest $22,500 back into their respective communities to help those in need.

District Simplified Grant applications, Terms and Conditions, and timetables for District Simplified Grants to be awarded in Rotary Year 2004-05 were mailed to all Club Presidents in mid-May. The District has set Saturday, August 7, 2004, as the deadline for Clubs to submit applications for consideration by the District Rotary Foundation Committee. The committee, chaired by PDG Frank Bradshaw, will meet on Saturday,August 12thto review the applications and Clubs will be notified of the actions takenby the Committee shortly afterwards.

Applications, Terms & Conditions, and timetables may be downloaded from the District Website at www.rotary6200.orgor requested from the District Office by calling 337/237-0628 (please note that this is a new number for the Rotary Office).

            WANTED ~ 3 Good

               Rotarians

              by DGE Don Chauvin

July is always an exciting time in Rotary. Rotary Clubs throughout the world have completed the installation of new officers and they are all off and running to achieve the goals recently set by each club’s president. In addition, Rotary International will have a year long celebration to commemorate the centennial anniversary of Rotary. If that isn’t enough to get excited about, add the fact that our District 6200 will enjoy the leadership provided by Governor Pam Daniels, the first female District Governor of District 6200, and that promises to be fun too.

3 Good Rotarians (continued)

With all of this, I too am excited about the opportunities that we will all enjoy to grow our individual club’s membership. Governor Pam has asked me to serve as chairman of the Membership Development Committee for the upcoming year, a task I quickly accepted.

I accepted the challenge because the assignment is one of the best in all of Rotary. It affords me an opportunity to go out and meet people and ask them to help Governor Pam achieve her goal of growing each club by 3 new members (or 10% of current club’s membership, whichever is greater) by June of 2005.

On July 17 these 10 Regional Membership Coordinators will be meeting in Abbeville for a training session to develop a plan to help each club within District 6200 increase membership and retain current members. They will be asking the membership chairperson from each of their respective clubs to also attend.

All club presidents are urged to use the services of these district leaders to help formulate a plan to grow and retain members in their club. If you wish, the regional coordinators will be happy to make a presentation to your club to emphasize recruitment of prospective members. PUT THEM TO WORK FOR YOU!

The spirit of Rotary was not intended to be the best kept secretin South Louisiana. Share it. Give the gift of Rotary to a friend, relative, or business associate and let them enjoy the “Family of Rotary”too!
