The Family of Rotary is our special emphasis in December. My personal family of 6 members is large by today’s standard and my Rotary Club of almost 500 members is large by any standard. However, the Family of Rotary is much larger. We are more than 1.2 million Rotarians in 32,000 clubs, plus 250,000 Interactors, 170,000 Rotaractors, 150,000 Community Corps members, 8,000 youth who participated last year alone in Rotary Youth Exchange and more. Rotary also includes the spouses, widows and widowers, and children of Rotarians. The entire Family of Rotary is well over two million strong. We enrich our lives as we spend time with our families. Let’s share this holiday season with our personal families and our club families. Let's also make a special effort to share time with our District 6200 family at the "Krewe of Rotary" Foundation Gala on Friday, February 1, 2008. The site is an elegant 5-star hotel featuring beautiful aerial night views; dinner is wine and filet mignon; entertainment is lively music and dancing to a great band; and the program spectacular is Bob Scott, Chairman of The Rotary Foundation, who will update us on its worldwide humanitarian efforts and recognize all of our new initial or multiple Paul Harris Fellows and major donors and clubs recently achieving 100% EREY or 100% Sustaining Member status. Tickets are only $100 each and have been distributed to each club; more can be obtained from Karin Viator at 1-800-301-8560. Make them a Christmas present! In any event, buy your tickets soon! Our communities – where much of our good work is performed -- are certainly part of our larger family, as well. They include local youth who have performed exemplary community service or a heroic deed, overcome adversity, inspired others through their actions or strength of character or excelled in academics. They are Young Heroes who should and can receive well-deserved recognition, but only if they are nominated. Obtain a form at www.lpb.org/programs/heroes and submit your or your club’s nomination before February 4, 2008. The winners will be honored in Baton Rouge on April 16th. Thank you for your extremely generous response to my call for contributions for the California fire victims. It was a wonderful opportunity to reciprocate for their assistance to our area after the storms. A full update on their recovery efforts is expected at the upcoming Rotary Emergency Disaster Initiative workshop, which I will attend in Nashville, TN. Our own PDG Don Chauvin is the Program Chair of this important RI event. I will report more to you on this important subject next month. Enjoy reading this month's District Newsletter. You’ll meet our GSE Team, see one picture of the Family of Rotary, learn the benefits of the Club Leadership Plan, view photos of a kitchen in Brazil that we helped to build and an ambulance in India we helped to purchase, and much more.
