Governor's Update

What a wonderful reception Nikki and I have received during each of our official club visits to date! Celebrating my birthday with Rotarians in Mamou and Ville Platte was a highlight. Your generous hospitality has been outstanding, the business meetings have been efficient and productive and the club meetings have been fun and well-attended.

We are deeply grateful for the generous club donations made in our honor to a parish homeless shelter, The Rotary Foundation and others. Ones that promoted our top District goal of literacy are a collection of accelerated readers to a school system and an elementary school, a book donation to a rural parish library and scholarships for youth to participate in local literacy improvement programs.

These club visits have clearly shown that significant Rotary projects are being planned in our District or are already underway to address meaningfully many pressing humanitarian needs that exist locally, regionally and internationally. They have also provided an excellent opportunity for outstanding social gatherings and joint club meetings effectively promoting the Family of Rotary within and between those clubs.

None of those or the many other Rotary projects would be accomplished without Rotarians and Rotary clubs. That’s why focusing on August as Membership Development and Extension Month is so vital. Have you earned your New Member Sponsor Pin yet? If not, do it now! Learn how and other great ideas by attending the outstanding half-day District Membership Seminar on August 25 which District Membership Chair Joe Hidalgo has planned for you. Keynote presenter PDG Pete Snider of the Dallas area has much to impart. Registration is free and online makes it easy!

This issue is full of need-to-know information, such as how to qualify for the Governor’s Literacy Award, apply for District Simplified Grants and PR Grants and learn to “d.r.e.a.m. BIG!” Get important upcoming deadlines and news about the Family of Rotary speakers and activities. See what other clubs are doing and much more. Read on!

Yours in Rotary,

Charles L. Spencer

District Simplifed Grants

How in 2006-07 did a town park in Donaldsonville get substantially upgraded; many foster children in East Ascension Parish receive suitcases; a woman’s shelter in Lake Charles obtain playground equipment; a town park in Golden Meadow get volleyball courts and a disk golf course; students in El Salvador and China receive scholarships; and a clinic in Honduras obtain an autoclave?

These and other worthy projects were made possible by District Simplified Grants (DSGs) awarded to local Rotary clubs by the District Rotary Foundation Committee (DRFC). You can apply now for this year’s grants! Read more

This beautiful Town Plaza Park in downtown Mamou has recently been created by the Rotary Club of Mamou by paving and bricking the walking surfaces, adding landscaping, erecting a Rotary town clock and sugar-kettle fountain, painting a mural, constructing a wrought iron fence and more is planned.
